Attitude, Optimism, Perseverance
“Eighty percent of success is showing up.”-Woody Allen
Do you often find yourself dreaming of great success and happiness in life but you’re just not sure how you can get there? I‘ve been there. The main goals in life, for most people (myself included), are happiness, success in all areas of life. But most of us simply do not know how to start chasing these dreams in order to make them reality.
This may sound cheesy but, it really is true that anyone is capable of being successful and that you really can achieve anything that you dream of with the right attitude and dedication. Although much later than I would have preferred, but I have realized that with the right attitude, perseverance, dedication, and optimism, truly anything is possible.
Success: What is it?
“He has achieved success who has worked well, laughed often, and loved much.” -Elbert Hubbard
Success is purely based on individual perception. How I gauge success or failure may be entirely different from how you see it but the common base line to success is that it is a positive change in position in whichever way pleasing to you or me.
The times in life when I have struggled the most and when achieving my dreams had seemed the most impossible were really the times where I learned the most about myself, and the world around me, and that’s what success really means to me being able to reach a higher plane, not how you get there but that you got there. And sometimes, success can be as simple as just making it through the day, or to keep moving forward on a goal when all you want to do is to give up. To me, those every day small successes are usually the most important to living a happy and successful life. On a larger scale acknowledging these little successes has a way of wiring your brain to remain positive, thinking positive and then before you know it, the bigger things start to happen.
Well I know, I know, we all have those days where things just seem hopeless and we’re ready to just give up on our dreams and throw in the towel but, in my experience, these are the days were a little perseverance, a tad bit more dedication, just hanging on a little longer can push us to gaining great success. Ever heard the saying that “the darkest part of the night is before dawn” – unknown? But a lot of times that darkest moment is what we commonly refer to as failure…
Failure?: What the hell is it anyway?
“It is impossible to live without failing at something unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all - in which case, you fail by default.” -J.K. Rowling
So, when it comes to failure, I often at times do not understand why it carry’s such a negative connotation when it’s simply an opportunity to perfect your work. When I was 3years old, my mom couldn’t afford to buy a birthday cake for my older sister and I. Our birthdays were less than a month apart so we often celebrated together. On this day, she probably thought she had failed her kids, well, their parents could not provide a simple cake for them some would think. Well fortunately, that was the first time she whipped up all sorts of ingredients from the kitchen, she made her first cake in a pot not a pan. She got some royal icing, eggs, and whipped up some squiggly designs on the cake, trust me – I don’t remember what it tasted like but OMG! It looked a hot mess.
To many, it was like aww…. Poor thing, to me at 3years old I was probably like– dude! I have a cake – to mom, she learned something she didn’t even think she had the ability to do. In a very short time, she baked baked and baked again, she perfected it, and people till this day beg her to bake their wedding cakes. She had a job, a good one, but even when the Nigerian government decided not to pay for months, we stayed well afloat. Baking became a very lucrative business for the family.
Well, the point is that positive thinking can make a difference in how you view failure. To succeed, your desire for success must exceed your fear of failure and if you are not willing to fail your just aren’t ready for success.
The Golden Key to SUCCESS
“A positive attitude brings strength, energy, motivation and initiative.” -Unknown
So, one of the questions I get asked a lot when having these types of conversation is – What’s that golden key for instant success? Well, I’ve asked myself and others that same question tons of times and sadly the answer I got is….. wait for it…wait for it… a big ol NOTHING!
There’s no such thing as instant success. However, I have discovered that there is a golden key to success not instant success but success long term success and that is the right “ATTITUDE”. Just like the example I gave earlier, your attitude towards something others may view as failure can make a big difference in if you actually failed (as in – your Super Mario has no lives left ) or you are on a path to success.
By the right attitude I mean, seeing the cup half full instead of half empty, finding the silver lining in every grey cloud, not seating the small things, celebrating the little victories, taking every negative thought that pops into your head and spin it in a positive way, the push - push – push mentality, never giving up, running away from negativity like it’s the plague, trying, trying, and trying again. … You’ve got it - positive thinking, that’s it.
Although it’s easier said than done, but the right attitude takes practice, but when you master it, the right attitude takes you to greater altitudes.
The Influence of Others
“To be of good quality, you have to excuse yourself from the presence of shallow and callow minded individuals.” -Michael Bassey Johnson
Even though I have said all that above, I must say that from personal experience, we are who we surround ourselves with and even when you try try try again, if you surround yourself with the wrong crowd, they WILL break you and with the right crowd, they can make you if you have the right attitude.
If you’ve ever had children, you know the worry of your child falling in with “the wrong crowd”. If you’ve ever been a child (which I would wage is everyone reading this,) then you know how concerned parents are about which “crowd” you are running around with. This is because parents know that the people we surround ourselves with can have a massive influence on our lives and who we become as people.
The company that we keep affects who we are as a person, our goals, and our outlook on life. Consequently, if we surround ourselves with positive, optimistic people who lift us up and encourage us to follow our goals then nothing is impossible. I also know from experience how these positive connections in life can truly lift you up to cross horizons that you never thought could be possible.
The golden key is “A Positive Attitude”, combine that with optimism, perseverance, dedication, and the support of encouraging relationships; you’ll see success and fulfillment in life is inevitable. Remember that success has no expiration date and that we can all achieve our dreams at any stage in life. Remain positive and find the silver lining in every grey cloud and you could find success in the most surprising of places.
